press release: When it was founded in 1984, the Madison Jazz Society’s mission was “…to encourage the performance and education of jazz”. In 2021, it was announced that MJS would cease the performance portion of its business and transition to focusing on its educational mission through its school grant and school residence programs. The new MJS format will be led by five current board members and others interested in its purpose.

Prior to the completion of the transition in June 2023, MJS will present six concerts in 2022 and 2023. President Linda Marty Schmitz said, “These events will be friends of jazz who have already appeared on the MJS stage and whom we are happy to welcome back to complete our series of presenting jazz in Madison in grand style.

Those that will occur are:

September 18 – Cornet Chop Suey from St Louis

October 30 – St Louis Stompers of St Louis

February 19 – Chicago’s West End Jazz Band

March 19 – Tennessee Groovus

April 16 – Midiri Brothers Jazz Sextet from Pennsylvania

May 21 – Bob Schulz’s Frisco Jazz Band of California
