A taste of 1970s New York is ready to grace the Main Stage at the Bridport Arts Centre.
Inspired by the Boogaloo Latin scene of the Big Apple in the 70s, the band Shing a Lings will deliver a unique fusion of Latin, soul and R&B in the evening with feel-good piano hooks, weaving horn lines and catchy voices.
The group is made up of half a dozen members who share vocals as well as flute, saxophone, trombone, guitar, piano, bass, drums and percussion.
Drew Salida is on vocals, flute and guitar and began his musical career in the London Underground, while Chicago native Charlie Williams tackles classical piano.
Musical director, multi-instrumentalist and whistle lover, Benny ‘The Reed’ Mortimer unites his love of funk, blues, jazz and Latin sounds in this project.
Rog Sansom on trombone, vocals and percussion, has toured Europe extensively playing in various musical productions. He is a member of the Mike Hoddinott Blues Allstars and vintage ska band The Traps, and recently joined The Shing a Lings.
Alex Pearson on bass spends a lot of time playing klezmer, folk and jazz music, from cozy pubs to big festival stages.
Drummer John Furlong has been playing in and around the Bristol music scene for many years – he’s always had a craving for latin beats.
The event starts at 8 p.m. on Friday, November 4.
Tickets are £12 for adults and £5 for students and can be purchased online from the Bridport Arts Center events page.
