Preservation Hall Jazz Band recruits Paul McCartney, more for “When The Saints Go Marching In” [Watch]
Preservation Room Jazz Band recently enlisted a team of star musicians for a special rendition of “When The Saints Go Marching In.” The New Orleans staple was joined by Paul McCartney, Dave Grohl, David Matthews, jim james, Elvis Costello, Nathaniel Rateliff, Irma Thomas, and more for the classic jazz tune.
The clip comes from PHJB’s Midnight Round Preserves fundraising live for the Preservation Room Foundation. Like most other venues across the United States, the Preservation Hall is closed indefinitely as the shutdown of live music continues, as the band at the iconic venue find themselves out of work.

The clip opens with Sir Paul on trumpet, which is a rare sight even for a legendary multi-instrumentalist like McCartney. The unfortunate thing, however, is that he’s not very good at it. Even with a song as simple as “When The Saints Go Marching In,” which is slaughtered at fourth-grade band recitals across the country every year, the former Beatles doesn’t seem to understand the basic concept of blowing it up. Frankly, it looks like something is stuck in there. But, even if you’re in the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, how do you tell Paul McCartney that he can’t play a particular instrument?
A semblance of relief finally comes when Thomas arrives to add vocals, but McCartney’s mud-filled trumpet still lingers in the back. Eventually, we get a close-up of Costello’s UK chompers as he provides additional vocals, while Grohl bangs a tambourine, blissfully unaware of the wreckage that this video will become. Next is Matthews who does a creepy version of the song turned skat that couldn’t be white anymore even though he was wearing the cargo shorts his fans buy by the truckload. By the time James, Rateliff and many more join us, this wreck has fallen off the rails and crashed into the bayou of N’awlins where it will hopefully sink and remain until the end of the time. In short, it is the equivalent of Gal GadotThe “Imagine” video of , except with people who are really good at music, but the same result is produced.
