October 15 – Charleston Jazz Orchestra + Sean Jones present Miles Davis Tribute

On October 15, the Charleston Jazz Orchestra and virtuoso trumpeter Sean Jones will pay tribute to one of the most influential and acclaimed figures in jazz history, Miles Davis. Davis shaped the course of modern improvisational music over his fifty-year career, becoming the standard-bearer for successive generations of musicians.

Guest artist Sean Jones developed an interest in jazz music after receiving two albums from Miles Davis (Kind of Blue and Tutu). Years later, Jones says, “Davis’ overall vision, the way he changed over time, the purity of sound, is probably the most powerful influence on me as an artist.”

A musical chameleon, Sean Jones is at home in any musical context – regardless of role or genre. Sean has featured prominently with a number of artists, recording and/or performing with many major jazz figures including Illinois Jacquet, Jimmy Heath, Frank Foster, Nancy Wilson, Dianne Reeves, Gerald Wilson and Marcus Miller. Sean was selected by Marcus Miller, Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter for their Tribute to Miles Tour in 2011.

Miles Ahead – Musings for Miles Davis marks the 5th concert of the Charleston Jazz Orchestra’s 14th season. Led by Maestro Robert Lewis, the CJO is known for its world-class musicians and dedication to preserving the Big Band sound. This performance was made possible in part by the National Endowment for the Arts.
