Each spring, the Monterey Jazz Festival invites the best student musicians from across the country and around the world to participate in the Next Generation Festival. Continuing its commitment to jazz education and the development of top jazz musicians and jazz performances, the Monterey Jazz Festival is sponsoring this Next Generation Jazz Orchestra concert.

Earlier this summer, players from 17 high schools in 10 states survived a competitive process to be chosen for the Monterey Next Generation Jazz Orchestra. After securing a seat in the band, the members spend a weekend in New York under the direction of Paul Contos, studying to perform some of the most challenging big band work available.

In what has become a Monterey tradition, the Next Generation Jazz Orchestra presents its latest show with a special guest – in this case, Monterey Artist-in-Residence Terence Blanchard.

NPR station based in Newark, NJ WBGO has been broadcasting some of the best jazz music in the world since 1979.
