New season to start with Armstrong’s tribute

Fifty years ago, Richard Nixon was in the midst of a re-election campaign, Francis Ford Coppola’s ‘The Godfather’ was the box office hit of the year – and the jazz arts group started making music in Greater Columbus.
To celebrate its half-century, the Jazz Arts Group, the parent organization of the Columbus Jazz Orchestradirected by the artistic director Byron Striplin — has a season-long doozy slated for fall and beyond.
For its 2022-23 season, the group will present five concerts with the Columbus Jazz Orchestra in a series at Southern Theater, 21 E. Main St.; four more with guest artists in a separate series in the Lincoln Theater, 769 E. Long St.; as well as other shows and events.

The season comes amid a period of change within the Jazz Arts Group, including longtime CEO Press Southworth III, announced in June his departure from the organization. Southworth remains in his current position as his replacement is sought via a nationwide search.

Columbus Jazz Orchestra Concerts
