jazz orchestra plays Sunday at Parc Vitale | Lifestyles

LAKEVILLE — The Vitale Park summer concert series continues Sunday with a performance by the Rochester Metropolitan Jazz Orchestra.

The free concert is scheduled for 6-8 p.m. at the park, 5828 Big Tree Rd.

The Rochester Metropolitan Jazz Orchestra was created to provide entertaining and educational big band jazz, which band members call the quintessential fusion of individual artistic expression with the collaboration of a large ensemble.

While the band prides itself on finding unique and thought-provoking literature to develop and share, the individual improvisational elements of jazz dictate that each performance is unique and memorable. In jazz, we never play our repertoire in exactly the same way twice, the orchestra says on its website.

The orchestra’s musical styles range from dixieland, blues and swing to latin, rock and fund. In addition to jazz standards from legends such as Count Basie and Duke Ellington, the orchestra plays newer works such as those by Antonio Carlos Jobim, Sammy Nestico, Gordon Goodwin and others. RMJO also features works by composers with regional ties such as Chuck Mangione, John LaBarbera and Harold Arlen. Arrangements from The Great American Songbook include tunes by George Gershwin, Frank Loesser, Frederick Loewe, Cole Porter, Richard Rodgers and Jimmy Van Heusen. And the concert program may also include big band arrangements of new pop, rock and funk songs.

The 20-piece orchestra was founded in 1998 and performs in various public and private venues in the region.

Vitale Park spectators are encouraged to come by car – or even by boat – and bring a lounge chair to enjoy a music-filled Sunday evening by Lake Conesus.

Performances are scheduled until August 28. Other upcoming concerts include:

not July 24: Paulsen Bake Band with special guest Warren.

not July 31: Howl of ten cents.

not August 7: The Music Makers.

not August 21: Buzzo and his friends.

not August 28: Midnight storm.
