This weekend, Buena Vista High School is hosting a concert by the Collegiate Peaks Select Honor Jazz Band.

This year’s group will be made up of both the college jazz group and the high school jazz group. The two groups will rehearse on Friday January 7 and Saturday January 8.

The group leader is Dan Bell, 34 years old teaching in various schools and 25 years old group leader at Cheyenne Mountain Junior High. Over the past 22 years, the Bell Jazz and Symphony groups have performed 13 times for the Colorado Music Educator Clinic / Conference, including a performance in January with the CMJH Symphony Group.

Bell frequently appears as a guest conductor with Colorado regional honor bands. As an experienced referee at festivals and jazz and concert competitions, he has presented workshops for the Teacher Training Institute of the International Association for Jazz Education in Kansas City, the Wyoming Music Educators All-State Convention, the Colorado Music Educators Association conference and clinic; and Colorado Bandmasters Association summer convention.

Bell received the Distinguished Fine Arts Teacher Award for the City of Colorado Springs in 2004 and was awarded by the Colorado Springs Youth Symphony for Outstanding Private Instructor in 2011 and Outstanding Music Teacher in 2017. In 2014, he was awarded a prize by the Colorado Springs Youth Symphony. been inducted into the prestigious National Association of Music Conductors.

The concert will take place on January 8 at 2 p.m. at the BVHS Performance Commons and will be open to the public. Participants must wear a mask. Admission is free, but donations will be gratefully accepted.
