Concert of wind ensemble and jazz orchestra

The Humboldt State University Wind Ensemble and Jazz Orchestra will perform on Saturday, October 30 at 8 p.m. at Fulkerson Recital Hall.

School of dance, music and theater for a live instrumental concert featuring the Wind Ensemble and Jazz Orchestra on Saturday, October 30 at 8 p.m. at Fulkerson Recital Hall.

The Wind Ensemble and conductor Paul Cummings are still looking at the exact repertoire for the concert at press time, but audiences can expect to hear classical orchestral music including brass, woodwinds. and percussion.

The Jazz Orchestra will perform five pieces, starting with “In A Mellow Tone” by Duke Ellington, arranged by Oliver Nelson. Nelson arranged the classic Ellington melody for the Buddy Rich group in the late 1960s and the solos will feature Rebekka Lopez on alto saxophone, George Epperson on trombone and Jeff Ruiz on trumpet.

The title of the following painting, “Deja Vu”, refers both to the play’s evocations during the big band era and to the way in which the musical themes of childhood return later. Composer Thomas Fredrickson was a longtime composition professor at the University of Illinois who was fluent in classical and jazz idioms. Featured soloists will be Professor Brian Post on piano, Chris Cox on trumpet and Isaac Williams on tenor saxophone.

David Springfield is a trombonist and pianist who teaches at Valdosta State University in Georgia, and his “A Little Peace” track record combines the relaxed swing feel of the Count Basie Orchestra with the harmonic language of modal jazz.

“Palmas” is by the great Latin pianist and salsa and jazz composer Eddie Palmieri, who is a NEA Jazz Master, the highest honor that any American jazz musician can receive. Like much of Palmieri’s work, he combines the rhythms and montunos of salsa with jazz improvisation. He will present solos by Raili Makela on alto saxophone, Brian White on trombone, Max Shere on guitar and Odalys Ramirez on congas.

” Who me ? Is from Count Basie’s classic album Chairman of the Board and was composed by tenor saxophonist Basie Frank Foster. Featured soloists will be Brian Post on piano and Chris Cox on trumpet.
