Preservation Hall Jazz Band and The Rascals Coming to MPAC in November

The Preservation Hall Jazz Band of New Orleans performs “Pass It On – 60th Anniversary Musical Celebration” at the Mayo Performing Arts Center on Thursday, November 10, 2022 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets cost between $29 and $69.

The Preservation Hall is a humble and much-loved hall dedicated to preserving the past and future of jazz. It is a worn and beloved space that is physically small but spiritually immense. People from all over the world make pilgrimages there. This fall, the Preservation Hall Jazz Band embarks on its own pilgrimage: a national tour to celebrate the Hall’s 60th anniversary.

At a time when musical currents intersect with unprecedented frequency, it is crucial to remember that New Orleans has been the place where sounds and cultures from around the world converse, mingle and resurface. Nowhere is this idea more embodied than in the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, which has carried the torch of New Orleans music for 60 years, while carrying it with enthusiasm as a reminder that the history they have founded to preserve is a living and vibrant history. .

The band’s mission remains focused on introducing audiences to the ineffable, almost religious experience of channeling their ancestors through the music and culture they inherited from them.

“Touring is part of our ritual,” adds Ben Jaffe, creative director of Preservation Hall. “It’s our tradition. When my parents started touring with the band in the early 60s, they brought something that most people didn’t even know existed on stages around the world. It was this wonderful revelation to people that something so beautiful could even exist. People come to Preservation Hall and have transformative experiences, and that’s part of our mission to get out into the world and make that experience accessible to people.
